What We Do
The Mediterranean Climate Action Partnership (MCAP) is a global alliance of regions with a mediterranean climate, working together to adapt to drought, wildfire, and heat.
The Partnership seeks to:
Expand public awareness of climate impacts and solutions in our regions and around the world, with innovative communications amplified through a common voice.
Learn from each other and build capacity around what does and does not work to confront shared climate threats through member convenings, study tours, and expert exchanges.
Accelerate concrete actions that protect communities from climate change impacts, prioritizing nature-based solutions that protect biodiversity, reduce greenhouse gases, and accelerate the just transition.
Exchange approaches on policies, programs and governance, investment and economic development strategies, and foster research collaboration that advances shared knowledge on trends and impacts.
Track and report progress to the global community to demonstrate Partnership success and catalog lessons learned for other bioregional replication.
Since its inauguration in December 2023, MCAP has worked with member regions to define a governance structure, detailed in the Leadership Council-approved MCAP Charter, and align around priorities, detailed in the 2024-2026 Action Agenda.
In order to shift from organization to implementation, MCAP established three Working Groups (Drought, Wildfire, and Heat) composed of technical experts from across member regions, that were tasked with developing actionable knowledge products, supporting on-the-ground projects, and scaling collective action.
Through the Work Groups, the Secretariat created the Mini Sprint Project Acceleration effort to facilitate collaboration across regions that can pilot innovative solutions around the three thematic areas.
The Secretariat also hosted its inaugural 2024 Annual Convening in partnership with member region and co-chair Catalonia bringing more 14 regions to Catalonia, Spain and second 2025 Annual Convening in partnership with member region Western Cape, bringing 12 member regions to South Africa.
Members traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan in 2024 to attend COP29, releasing a joint statement to call for climate action and investments in their geographies and will be demonstating their progress to advance implementation at COP30 in Rio and Belem, Brazil.
