Leaders Set to Gather in Los Angeles to Advance Climate Solutions Protecting Mediterranean Regions Globally
As climate impacts intensify globally, regional governments are increasingly stepping up to collaborate and accelerate action.
In the coming weeks, global leaders will gather in California to continue this momentum building for regions that share Mediterranean climates. International leaders will not only learn from California’s global leadership on climate resilience and adaptation, but will also build partnerships that move the needle on tangible impacts.
“California’s Mediterranean climate makes us especially vulnerable to wildfire, drought, and extreme heat—threats we share with regions across the world,” said California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot. “That’s why we formed the Mediterranean Climate Action Partnership with 15 other governments, working together to strengthen resilience on the front lines of climate change. This spring, we’re proud to welcome global leaders to Los Angeles to share progress and advance our collective efforts.”
The Mediterranean Climate Action Partnership (MCAP) is a coalition of subnational governments that unites 16 regions across five continents. The MCAP Secretariat, administered by Resilient Cities Catalyst, is co-hosting the convening with the California Natural Resources Agency, on behalf of the State of California, with support from local implementation partner, Climate Resolve, in Los Angeles from April 14-17. MCAP was launched in 2023 at COP28 in response to a growing understanding of the worldwide effects of climate change, and the need for global collaboration to address rising threats.
In addition to subnational governments stepping up in the absence of national climate leadership, the Partnership represents a unique and promising approach to address climate risks among regions that share natural characteristics, terrain, weather, and subsequently similar environmental challenges. Mediterranean climates exist all over the globe and provide homes and economic livelihoods to over 150 million people. Shared geography and climate means common hazards and risks – particularly for extreme heat, drought and water management, and wildfire.
This third annual convening will showcase achievements through engaging discussions and compelling tours, bringing solutions to life and turning urgency into action. The week will explore solutions for adapting to extreme heat and urban cooling efforts, approaches to resilient wildfire recovery and proactive wildland‑urban management for fire risk reduction and climate-smart agriculture, urban landscaping and water retention, and innovative stormwater capture and water reuse technologies.
Importantly, in the local context of Los Angeles, the convening will particularly highlight the integration of community‑driven approaches and cultural infrastructure as key pillars of adaptation. Over the three days, leaders will come together, sharing lived experiences that ultimately result in more impactful, transferable solutions to advance action and accelerate the Partnership's momentum in the face of intensifying climate impacts.
