Post 1: 2025 MCAP Annual Convening

  • 🌍 The 2025 MCAP Annual Convening commences in the Western Cape!

From May 6–9, Mediterranean Climate leaders from across five continents are gathering to accelerate action on climate threats that hit close to home — drought, wildfire, and extreme heat.

This year’s convening is all about turning momentum into action: member regions are advancing priority projects through MCAP “mini-sprints,” exploring new partnerships, and exchanging promising practices that can be adapted and scaled across Mediterranean climate zones.

As subnational governments, MCAP members face these risks firsthand — and are uniquely positioned to turn local insight into collective action. These challenges are urgent, and this convening is grounded in what’s already working, while also building new solutions to combat drought, wildfire, and extreme heat. We are invested in a shared belief that regional action can spark global change.

Post 2: Meet the Members

  • 🌍 Meet the MCAP Member Regions The Mediterranean Climate Action Partnership (MCAP) is a global alliance of subnational governments working to protect their communities, economies, and ecosystems from the growing impacts of drought, wildfire, and extreme heat.

What brings these regions together is more than climate — its climate type. Mediterranean climate zones exist on five continents, sharing seasonal patterns of hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. That common baseline brings with it shared risks — and shared opportunity for collaboration.

MCAP is a member-driven partnership. Each member plays a key role in guiding MCAP’s strategy, shaping joint initiatives, and contributing to the Leadership Council and technical work groups. The goal is clear: translate knowledge into action, and support locally grounded solutions that can be adapted and scaled globally.

Current MCAP Member Regions: 🇲🇽 Baja California Sur 🇨🇱 Biobío & Santiago de Chile 🇺🇸 California 🇪🇸 Catalonia 🇬🇷 Central Greece 🇫🇷 Occitanie & Region Sud 🇮🇹 Emilia-Romagna 🇦🇺 New South Wales, South Australia & Victoria 🇲🇦 Oriental Maroc, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra & Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima 🇿🇦 Western Cape

From vineyard valleys to coastal cities, wildfire zones to drought-stressed regions, these governments are leading where the impacts are most direct — and where innovation is already underway.

As MCAP continues to grow, these regions are setting the tone: implementation-focused, member-led, and grounded in local realities with global reach.

  • 🌍 Meet the MCAP Member Regions
MCAP is a member-driven partnership of subnational governments working together to confront the climate challenges they know best — drought, wildfire, and extreme heat.

From the hills of Catalonia to the coastlines of California, the valleys of South Australia to the vineyards of the Western Cape, these 16 regions span five continents, all linked by a Mediterranean climate — and a shared commitment to climate action.

Post 3: From Inauguration to Implementation

  • 🌍 From Inauguration to Implementation: MCAP in Motion

In 2023, MCAP launched with a clear purpose: to build a global platform where Mediterranean climate regions could share knowledge, elevate solutions, and lead from the front lines of climate risk.

That first convening in Catalonia laid the groundwork — building trust, aligning priorities, and creating the infrastructure for meaningful collaboration. Through technical working groups on drought, wildfire, and extreme heat, member regions began shaping the agenda. Cross-regional exchange took root, breaking down barriers across time zones, languages, policies, and political systems.

Now, in 2025, we’re moving from planning to implementation. This year’s convening in the Western Cape marks a pivotal shift: MCAP is no longer just a space for connection — it’s a platform for action.

    Member regions are:
    • Launching pilot projects through MCAP’s first mini-sprints
    • Testing practical tools to support local decision-making
    • Building new public-private partnerships to scale impact
    • Addressing immediate climate risks while shaping long-term strategies

As we look toward COP30, MCAP is positioning subnational governments not just as contributors to the global dialogue, but as drivers of implementation. The work is urgent — and it’s already underway.

Post 4: Living Labs

  • 🌿 As part of the 2025 MCAP Annual Convening, member regions are visiting Living Lab sites across the Western Cape — seeing firsthand how local innovation is advancing climate resilience.

Site 1: Berg River Dam, Franschhoek
This dam is part of a critical regional water system. The site highlights how long-term water security is being supported through ecological flow releases (controlled water releases that help sustain rivers and ecosystems) and forestry exit (removal of non-native trees that consume excess water). These efforts are coordinated across government agencies and local users to strengthen drought preparedness.

Site 2: The Water Hub, Franschhoek
A hands-on research and demonstration site where teams are piloting nature-based water treatment — using natural systems like plants and soil to clean water — alongside passive cooling designs that help reduce indoor temperatures in informal settlements vulnerable to extreme heat.

Site 3: Amandel River Burn Site, Franschhoek Pass
Here, prescribed fire is used as a proactive land management strategy to reduce wildfire risk, manage invasive species, and protect water catchments. The site shows how science-based fire approaches, when implemented collaboratively, can support both ecosystem health and community safety.

    Site 4: Kromco Packhouse, Grabouw
In one of the Western Cape’s key agricultural zones, this site demonstrates how the fruit sector is adapting to climate stress through regenerative agriculture (farming that improves soil and ecosystem health), precision irrigation (efficient water use guided by data), and strong public-private collaboration.

Each Living Lab reflects the Western Cape’s commitment to practical, place-based action — and offers lessons that can be adapted across Mediterranean climate regions worldwide.
